Misuse of City credit card

Sent to Mayor Lyn Truitt, no responce.

Lyn, I thought that I sent this, maybe not.

Associated Press
May. 16, 2007 12:08 PM Tucson, Ariz. - A former Patrol agent faces a possible prison sentence after admitting that he used an agency credit card for personal use.
Paul C. Smith 111, 33, entered a guilty plea Monday at the Federal Courthouse in Tucson to one count of theft of federal money, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona.

The maximum penalty Smith faces is a year in prison, a $100,000 fine or both.

Smith also agreed to pay restitution, resign from the U.S. Border Patrol and not seek future employment with local, state or federal law enforcement.

Smith used a Border Patrol credit card and charged $1,000 worth of work done on a golf cart.

Smith said he knew the card was paid automatically out of Border Patrol funds, so there was no way for him to repay.

This is exactly what a previous City of Surprise council member did, my question was why were no charges filed.

Winning the Election

Taken from Surprise Today

Our View

Voters elect change — but will Truitt deliver it?

Like it or not, voters in Surprise spoke clearly last week. Things must change. This community is no longer Podunk, and it has not been such an insignificant dot on the Valley map for some time.
But neither has it been run as a city that has been on the move for years. In fact, for every positive development such as a new public safety building or tennis center, there has been an equally embarrassing moment emanating from the sometimes petty, often outrageous behavior exhibited by council members.
Outgoing Mayor Joan Shafer clearly loves the community, and we trust she will continue to be an important part of moving it forward as we hope all of the former council members who either stepped down from their seats or were voted out of office will be.
But Surprise has outpaced Mayor Shafer’s abilities to govern it. Regrettably, that has been occurring for some time.
And while Mayor-elect Lyn Truitt will have his honeymoon in office following his swearing-in come January, no one knows if his leadership will be able to overcome divisions in Surprise that run long and deep.
But he needs to make a start.
He will need to weather criticism from those who have and will continue to oppose him. It will be easy at first to be gracious for the new mayor, but as time goes by, should the critics not fade away, it will become tougher.
He cannot become like the embattled Joan Shafer did late in her days as the city’s leader with a fuse so short that discussion of controversial issues became more of a nuisance than a necessity of open government.
Truitt needs to conduct the frequently messy business of the democratic process in full view of the public. Incidentally, a word of advice to the future mayor, critics can be right from time to time.
He and others on the council also need to let city staff members do the jobs they are being paid to do, unencumbered by elected officials’ political and personal agendas.
The 2-to-1 victory margin that Truitt received in defeating Cliff Elkins certainly is a mandate for change and it is an initial show of trust for the man elected to lead this city.
Like the voters who have decided to put him in office, we hope that Lyn Truitt is up to the task.
And like everyone who lives here, we will pay close attention
