Being a politician

How can we say? Run for office if you’re not a politician, if you’re not, try to accomplish something, those that understand the system should make our politician’s know that they work for us, not themselves. They are more beneficial to the city serving on committees.

Because Councilman Joe Johnson was a seasoned politician we have one of the best tennis facility in the nation.

After being in office for a year and a half what has our Liberal Mayor Lyn Truitt and the rest of the council accomplished?

Renewable-energy rules

Utilities regulated by Arizona Corporation Commission:
• 15 percent of energy from renewables required by 2025.

• One-third of that energy to come from “distributed” sources (like rooftop solar).

• Half the distributed energy must come from homes, half from businesses.

Salt River Project:

• 15 percent from renewables required by 2025.

• Hydroelectric-dam energy can be counted toward goal.

• Energy saved through efficiency efforts can be counted.

Update fair housing workshop

The date and location of the Surprise Fair Housing Workshop has been changed. The new date is April 25thth with the free workshop offered from 1-3 pm. The new location is the Surprise Senior Center at 15832 N. Hollyhock Street, Surprise, AZ 85374.

Understanding Fair Housing law means that people are better equipped to help themselves, their families, friends and communities, if issues arise. If you rent, did you know that your landlord must entertain requests for physical modifications to the premises? If you own your home, did you know that in single-family developments, HOA Boards must also entertain requests for modifications to common areas and accommodations relating to CC&R’s (Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions)? This is especially helpful with age-restricted communities where flexibility of these may be needed

Recycling

In an Azcentral article the city of Surprise is getting a recycling center, that will open in next summer. The facility will be Approx. 65,000 square ft. with 135 new jobs, 150,000 tons can be recycled each year.

The Recycling Center will service Surprise, Goodyear, Tolleson and Litchfield Park.

Assuming that this project had to be approved by the City of Surprise, what North and south bound streets are to be used to handle the additional truck traffic? Will there be a cost to maintain the street’s used by these trucks and at whose cost?

Surprise Bond Meeting

The March 24th meeting was at Willow Canyon High School, read the minutes, they are interesting. I see they are finally taking my advice in having a facilitator, I had recommended Bill Pupo.

The next meetings will be held April 14th and 21st at 6:30 PM at the Jury Assembly Room at the Public Safety Building.

Understanding

With all the start-ups in Bio Tec or Translational Research companies, we need to take a step back and review what we are doing, when spending tax money.

The history in Arizona is there have been a lot of Wolfs, they have always been smarter then the Lambs.

In hard timesThe State of Arizona cut $22.5 million that was intended for Science Foundation Arizona from the 2009 budget.

The state’s refusal to fund the foundation sends a message to technology, biomedical research and other 21st century firms that Arizona isn’t committed to scientific research, education and development — which, are the foundation’s missions.

The City of Surprise should take notice, before they commit to any agreement with these Bio firms.

What’s this?

Excerpts from Azcentral by Cecilia Chan, March 25th

It is the company’s first partnership with a municipality in the Valley, said Jeanine Jerkovic, Surprise economic development manager.

Staff is exploring rehabilitating the four-building City Hall campus on Bell Road and is seeking roughly $3 million in federal stimulus money.

Is the City of Surprise’s staff working on their own, I can find no record that the City Council discussed this at a meeting.

Is the City of Surprise going into private business, and who get’s the $3 million?

Utility bills not paid

We could have recovered some of the $300,000 due for utility bills not paid.

As Council was told that the owner’s of rental property was responsible that utility bills were paid, in my view because it was an investment they should been made to cough up, what was owed.

Sounds like the AIG deal, the rich get richer.

The city could have refused to give them a rental license until they paid for past utility bill’s.
