Bridge work on Bell to begin June 1

Construction work and lane restrictions hours are 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.  Monday - Friday.  Night work may be required during the hours of 9 p.m. -o 5 a.m., Monday - Friday.

SimonMed expanding presence

Catholic Healthcare West and SimonMed Imaging Inc. are partnering to provide outpatient imaging services throughout Arizona and expand SimonMed’s national footprint. The two organizations created a limited-liability company called SimonMed Imaging LLC in which CHW will have 40 percent ownership and SimonMed will have 60 percent.

Biotech-startup interest grows

The Surprise economic-development staff has received interest from potential partners and tenants in growing a biotech industry out of the old City Hall, but there are no takers yet. The City Council last month gave the go-ahead to convert its old City Hall into an incubator where bioscience startups would get financial help, mentoring and inexpensive rent.

Surprise is offering a Youth Basketball Camp, June 15 – 17, for boys and girls ages 5-15 and a Youth Basketball Summer League beginning in July.

 

During the basketball camps, coaches and players from the Willow Canyon basketball program will teach participants the basic fundamentals of the game of basketball in a safe and fun environment. Instructors will teach skills such as passing, shooting, dribbling and footwork. Participants will also be provided with experience in game situations, along with learning defensive and offensive strategies.

 

The Summer Youth Basketball League, for boys and girls ages 5 -15, begins in July. This league continues to teach the game of basketball in the spirit of sportsmanship, fun and wholesome competition. The summer league is a condensed version of the winter league where teams will play two games a week.

 

Resident registration for the camp or league runs through May 30. Late and non-resident registration will be held June 1 – 5. A special Saturday registration will be available only to Surprise residents on Saturday, May 30 from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the Community and Recreation Services Office, 15960 N. Bullard Avenue. Registration is also available online at www.surpriseaz.com/recreation.

 

The City of Surprise is looking for youth basketball coaches. If you are interested, please fill out a volunteer application and get fingerprinted at the Community and Recreation Services Office. For more information, please contact the Sports Division at 623.222.2000.

This summer, the Surprise Community and Recreation Services Department will offer Art, Yoga, and Genealogy classes for the 50+ set at the Sierra Montana Recreation Center, 14861 N. Spring Lane.

The Surprise General Obligation Bond Committee will recommend to the City Council that a $185 million bond question be brought before the voters in November.

 

Surprise 11 will broadcast the graduation ceremonies from Surprise Stadium for Willow Canyon, Valley Vista and Dysart High Schools to a television and internet audience.

 

Each school’s graduation ceremony will begin airing the evening after the actual ceremony. Here are the special viewing times for next week:

 

Willow Canyon High School, Tuesday, May 19, 7 p.m.

Valley Vista High School, Wednesday, May 20, 7 p.m.

Dysart High School, Thursday, May 21, 7 p.m.

 

 

 

 

In addition, all three graduations will be broadcast Saturday, May 23, beginning at 5 p.m. and again on Sunday, May 24, beginning at 8 a.m.

 

All graduations will be available for online viewing at www.surpriseaz.com/surprise11. Use the “email a link to this video” icon to send a web version to friends and family throughout the world! ) The award-winning Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex tennis program registration has begun for all summer session classes and leagues.

 

June classes include Adult Challengers, for the low-intermediate adult player; Drills and Skills for the more advanced player; and junior classes for players between 4 and 18 years old. In addition there are a wide variety of options for beginner and advanced beginner players.

 

All classes are instructed by USPTA or PTR professionals. The first summer session of classes begins the week of June 1st.

 

Prices for classes range between $45 and $120 for a four-week session. If you aren’t sure what level of player you or your child are contact Chris Brewer – Tennis Supervisor at 623-222-2423 to arrange a free evaluation.

) In compliance with section 42-17107, Arizona Revised Statutes; the City of Surprise is notifying its property taxpayers of the City of Surprise’s intention to raise its primary property tax taxes over last year’s level.

 

The City of Surprise is proposing an increase in primary property taxes of $136,655 or 2%.

 

For example, the proposed tax increase will cause the City of Surprise’s primary property taxes on a $100,000 home to increase from $55.48 to $56.61.

 

This proposed increase is exclusive of increased primary property taxes received from new construction. The increase is also exclusive of any changes that may occur from property tax levies for voter approved bonded indebtedness or budget and tax overrides.

 

All interested citizens are invited to attend the public hearing on the tax increase that is scheduled to be held during the regular council meeting at 6:00 p.m. on May 28, 2009 at the City of Surprise
