Council meeting, during the City Manager Report.
Item 1:
The City of Surprise has been recognized by the American Heart Association (AHA) as a Gold Level Fit-Friendly organization! City Manager Chris Hillman accepted the award during Tuesday’s City Council meeting. “Healthy employees are happy employees and I appreciate the efforts of our HR Department, Health and Wellness Committee and all employees for their efforts to be as healthy as they can be,” said Hillman. The AHA recognizes companies that demonstrate progressive leadership by making the health and wellness of their employees a priority. The City was recognized at the Gold level for offering a variety of health and wellness programs, including the bi-weekly hiking club. According to the AHA, adult Americans spend a majority of their waking hours at work, and many are in sedentary careers. With obesity costing American businesses $12.7 billion per year in medical expenses and $225.8 billion in health-related productivity losses, any program that increases physical activity of employees will: · Increase productivity · Reduce absenteeism · Lower turnover · Reduce healthcare costs

Jack, an electrician with the Public Works Facilities Maintenance Division, has dedicated a substantial portion of his off-work hours helping to improve the Surprise community.
Jack started a Block Watch program in his Ashton Ranch neighborhood and the results include the abatement of open space vandalism and personal property crimes.
As a member of the Ashton Ranch HOA he also helped launch a campaign directed at promoting good citizenship to the local youth. To further his campaign to encourage citizenship, sportsmanship and wholesome youth activities, Jack has volunteered as a coach for both volleyball and baseball for the past four years.
Finally, Jack sponsors the annual Bass Fishing Tournament that benefits the “In House Foundation,” a charity that raises money for out-of-work families and families with excessive medical bills.
Jack Hensley, through his modest and unassuming leadership, has been a positive influence on countless people in our community.

A Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is opening next month at the AZ TechCelerator, thanks to a partnership between the City of Surprise and Maricopa Community Colleges.
Beginning February 8, the SBDC will open every Wednesday, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Small Business Counselor Jenny Herschaft, an instructor at Scottsdale Community College with a Masters in Finance, will be on site to offer free advice to small business owners in Surprise as well as the companies located in the AZ TechCelerator.
“We will also offer a series of business seminars via video conferencing throughout the spring,” says AZ TechCelerator Manager Julie Neal. “These seminars are free and will be moderated through the SBDC counselor.”
The SBDC’s TechEDge program will also be offered at the AZ TechCelerator. This 10-week technology-focused entrepreneur course is designed for technology or science-based ventures who are involved in either a new business or in the early stages of development.
“We are also on the lookout for business professionals to serve as mentors to the young businesses here at the AZ TechCelerator,” adds Neal. “So if you are business-savvy and would like to share your expertise with a new venture, we’d love to invite you to meet with our companies.”
Neal says in-demand mentors would include current members of the finance and business law fields and related industries. Mentors are asked to provide at least two hours of pro-bono time to AZ TechCelerator members and offer them discounted billing rates for additional service.
AZ TechCelerator, is the city’s business incubator, providing startup businesses with the affordable space, tools and resources they need to grow. For more information visit www.aztechcelerator.com or call Julie Neal at 623.222.3300.

Received an answer from Councilman Mike Woodard, my interpetion of his answer is that the mayor and the councilmembers positions are full time positions. If this is true could a member of the council have another full time job and still be a council member?
Mikes responce; To the best of my knowledge nothing has changed, the council at the time I said that had instructed the city manager to make that change from P/T to full. I am not aware of any further changes.
