Push to keep streetlights powered continues
Surprise, AZ (June 29, 2010) The City of Surprise will continue paying for street light service in several city locations beyond June 30, until City Council can consider a 60-day extension for accepting Street Light Improvement District (SLID) petitions at their next meeting on July 22.
Fifty percent, plus 1, of the property owners in an area must agree to form a SLID and sign a petition stating that fact. After a SLID is formed, the cost of illuminating the streetlights in the District is paid for through the owners’ Primary Property Tax.
“We are seeing some real progress,” says City Engineer Nick Mascia. “City Council has asked us to work very closely with the community on this issue and already the Coyote Lakes and Stonebrook neighborhoods have obtained enough signatures to form a SLID. With many of the other areas getting close, we hope the extra time will result in more property owners submitting their petitions to us.”
SLID petitions collected as of late last week:
Kingswood Park Parcel 16: 27 out of 38 required petitions received.
Bell West Ranch (4 lights only on Cotton Lane, not the neighborhood): 32 out of 132 required petitions received.
Original Townsite Commercial North: 10 out of 17 required petitions received.
Original Townsite Commercial South: 1 out of 30 required petitions received.
Original Townsite Commercial West: 2 out of 8 required petitions received.
Blank SLID petitions are available for printing at www.surpriseaz.com/slidpetition. Property owners can sign the petition and mail or deliver it to the city at 16000 N. Civic Center Plaza, Surprise, AZ, 85374, to the attention of Ms. Patsy Fawcett. You may also call Ms. Fawcett directly at 623-222-6141 for questions.
