The City of Surprise Census 2010 Complete Count Committee and the Surprise Regional Chamber of Commerce are working together to promote Census 2010 participation.
“It makes sense for our business community to support the Census,” says Surprise Regional Chamber of Commerce President and CEO David Moss. “The federal dollars attached to an accurate Census population count help fund job training centers, improve transportation and support education, and that is good for business and the community.”
Census data is used by local decision-makers to determine where new roads, hospitals, child-care facilities, senior citizen centers and schools should be built.
And businesses use census data to determine where to locate supermarkets, new housing and other facilities.
“I look forward to meeting with Chamber members this month to garner Census support,” says Surprise Economic Development Manager Jeanine Jerkovic, also the staff liaison to the city’s Citizen Census Committee. “We will be offering free window clings, promoting the Census, to anyone wanting to put them in their storefront windows and discuss other options, such as printing a Census reminder on their receipts.”
In mid-March the Census Bureau will begin mailing forms to all residences and residents should complete their form and return it by National Census Day, April 1.
Each Surprise resident counted by the Census equals $1,300 in federal funds for the city to support public safety, transportation, senior services and other important civic needs.
An accurate population count, as determined every 10 years by the Census, is tied to more than $400 billion in federal funding split nationwide and determines how many congressional seats each state receives in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Census is completely confidential and takes about 10 minutes to complete the 10 questions.

Surprise, AZ (February 25, 2010) The soccer match between Chivas USA and Columbus Crew has been relocated back to the Reach 11 Soccer Complex in Phoenix due to the threat of rain this Saturday. After discussions with both organizations; recent rain patterns and forecast for more rain this weekend was concerning with respect to optimum field conditions and the safety of the players. The match was slated to be played on the “8” acres at the Surprise Recreation Campus. The “8” acres also serves the campus as a storm water retention basin, additional rain would flood the field and become unplayable.
Both organizations have expressed an interest in returning to the Phoenix – Surprise area in future years to engage in preseason training. Surprise is fortunate to have developed professional relationships with several MLS organizations and believes the experience will bode well with future opportunities to bring professional soccer to Surprise.
Again, the soccer match scheduled for Saturday February 27 will not take place in Surprise and will return to Reach 11 Soccer Complex in Phoenix.
Questions please call Mark A. Coronado at 623.222.2000.

In Surprise, City Manager Randy Oliver said the West Valley community projects to save $137,000 annually after eliminating vehicle allowances for employees in March. In this economy, every dollar helps.”

It was an exciting final day of action at the $25,000 Symmetry Software Women’s Pro Circuit Tennis Championships as the doubles and singles champions were decided. The doubles final was easily one of the most competitive matches of the event as unseeded Americans Christina Fusano and Courtney Nagle took on the fourth seeded team of Chun-Mei Ji and Yi Fan Xu (China). Fusano and Nagle came out quickly and took control of the first set early before taking it 7-5. Ji and Xu found their game near the end of the first set and although they dropped the opener they took the second set with more aggressive net play and less unforced errors. Ji and Xu won the second set 6-2. Too many unforced errors in the match-tiebreaker proved too costly as Xi and Xu captured the breaker 10-5.
A much anticipated singles final of Abigail Spears (USA) and Kurumi Nara (JPN) unfortunately did not live up to expectations. The aggressive and consistent play that Nara had become known for during the week did not carry into the final. Nara commited too many unforced errors to amount any sort of comeback. Spears’ combined efficient but offensive minded tennis to take control of the match early. She won the opening set quickly at 6-1. Spears’ ability to follow up deep penetrating groundstrokes into the net was too much for Nara who came to net on a couple of occasions but was obviously uncomfortable being there. Spears took the match 6-1, 6-2 to capture the title.

The City of Surprise Census 2010 Complete Count Committee is hard at work in their efforts to raise public awareness for the upcoming Census count.
“This is a great group of community members, who have moved beyond brainstorming ideas and are ready to put them into action,” says Community Development Director Jeff Mihelich. “In March, our community will really start to see how important it is to fill out and return the Census form by April 1.”
Each Surprise resident counted by the Census equals $1,300 in federal funds for the city to support public safety, transportation, senior services and other important civic needs.
Since meeting in January, Census Committee members and city staff liaisons have been developing a variety of outreach efforts including working with local HOAs and retirement communities to post Census 2010 literature in community newsletters and Web sites.
A Census 2010 booth will be added to the city’s Block Party Trailer set up, so as neighbors gather at social events the Census message will be part of the information sharing.
Residents will also be able to see Census 2010 Public Service Announcements, produced by Surprise 11, during Spring Training games at Surprise Stadium.
The business community has agreed to display Census promotional materials in their shops and offices. Motorists on eastbound Bell Road will see the “Census 2010: Count Me In” message prominently displayed on a billboard as they cross over Friendship Bridge, starting in mid-March. And the city’s sanitation vehicles will transform into moving Census billboards with Census signage added next month.
“The committee is working with the school district and local churches, so that no matter where you are in the city, there is a good chance you will see or hear about the Census,” adds Mihelich. “Participating in the Census is a great way to show your community pride.”
An accurate population count, as determined every 10 years by the Census, is tied to more than $400 billion in federal funding split nationwide and determines how many congressional seats each state receives in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Census is completely confidential and takes about 10 minutes to complete the 10 questions. The U.S. Census Bureau will begin mailing the Census 2010 forms March 15 - 17.
