Recall election ballots go out in the mail Thursday for all District 6 voters in Surprise.

Councilwoman Gwyn Foro is defending her seat against Sun Village resident Skip Hall, a former city planning and zoning commissioner.

A third candidate, Chet Neier, announced last week he was no longer campaigning. Though his name is still on the ballot, he has urged voters to select Hall.

Residents launched recall efforts against Foro in the fall, securing enough signatures to force the election, estimated to cost taxpayers $10,000.

Foro’s opponents have criticized her attitude toward constituents as well as her support of controversial issues such as the retroactive retirement plan and auto allowance for City Council members. Foro said she has the majority support, attributing the recall to critics who do not like her straight-talking leadership style.

Ballots will be due back by March 11. Starting Thursday, residents can also stop in City Hall, 12425 W. Bell Road, to vote in person or drop off ballots from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. On March 11, City Hall will expand hours from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information call 623-222-1000.

Unofficial results will be available after 8 p.m. on March 11 at surpriseaz.com.
