Appearance before council Jan.24th
First of all I want to thank and congratulate the newly elected members of this council for taking an active part in our city government.
Having been a member of this body, I know the daunting challenges, facing you on a daily basis
Unfortunately the previous council has placed you in an awkward position such as the contracts with the City Manager and City Attorney neither of these contracts followed city policy.
The members of this council should read these contracts and the citizens of Surprise should hope that a contract like these are not written for the new city manager.
A few points that I would like to make about these contracts, so that you might understand where I am coming from.
At the last meeting we were told that that the city managers contracts were for one year. In the past they have been for two years.
The present contracts are indefinite,
They do not contain an expiration date
This is not usual in contracts
Both the city manager and attorney are paid a hefty severance pay even if they are laid off for cause.
We have the banking and real estate industry represented on this board
if those industries are operating like this
I can understand the problems we’re having today. Lets not follow the lending, banking and real estate chaos that has been happening in this country
my impression is
that most of you are street smart
So I am asking each of you to run our city smart
