SURPRISE, AZ (November 1, 2007) Surprise/WUIW offer ways to create winter landscape
Cooler temperatures will soon be on the way and Surprise and the Water- Use It Wisely program remind people that a winter desert landscape can be low-water, high-color and high-flavor.When choosing a plant for your winter garden consider cacti, agaves and other succulents for their low-water needs. For color- go for the purple hop bush or dwarf bottlebrush. For your containers plant a colorful mix of Mexican poppies, blackfoot daisies or penstemons. And for you chefs- plant an array of herbs, including rosemary, lemon grass, oregano and thyme. When it comes to planting in pots remember the lighter the pot, the easier it is to move indoors if the winter nights become too chilly for your plants. And a good quality soil mix is a must. Choose a cactus/succulent mix for those varieties and for everything else use a lightweight potting soil or a blend of one-third potting soil, one-third vermiculite and one-third pre-moistened peat moss. For additional information on winter color and container gardening, visit the Water Services page by clicking on City Departments via www.surpriseaz.com and then click on the Water- Use It Wisely banner. Water- Use It Wisely is a water conservation campaign involving many Arizona towns and municipalities, including Surprise.
For your coverage consideration….
